West Morris Soccer Club will be offering a Spring Soccer Program for its youth. This new program will run for six consecutive weeks beginning the first week of May. Sessions will be held two weekdays per week for each age group.
The focus of the Spring Soccer Program will be on game play on small-sided fields. Soccer experts agree that one of the best ways to develop young players is by having them participate in small-sided soccer. This format allows a child plenty of touches and opportunities on the ball. Small-sided soccer also forces a player to work on their close ball control, passing accuracy, dribbling, foot work and to better understand how to utilize teammates to move a ball up and down a field. All of this translates into developing better tactical and technically-skilled players.
Small-sided soccer benefits all players, from the novice to the seasoned, the 5-year old to those 18 and beyond. A true player is never too old for small-sided soccer.
A professional trainer will be present for each session and games will be supervised and run by both the trainers and volunteer coaches. Each session will begin with a 10-minute warm-up and then focus on game play. Rules and size of field will be modified according to ages. Five-aside (5v5), four-aside (4v4) or three-aside (3v3) games will be played. Experts agree - a small-sided soccer format provides excellent opportunity to further develop players of all ages and abilities.
At this time we are working with the trainers and field schedulers to determine the exact days and times the sessions will be held for the various age groups. Some of this will depend upon the actual numbers that register.
If your child is between the ages of Kindergarten to 12th grade and is interested in participating in the Spring Soccer Program, we urge you to register as soon as possible to help us determine the approximate numbers we can expect. The program is open to all players of all levels, including intramural, travel, PFC and those that may play at school. Registration numbers will dictate whether we are able to offer the program to the older ages.
Also, if you are able to do so, remember to volunteer as a coach. As with any youth program, we rely on our parents to help us provide these programs for our children. The trainers will be present at all sessions, we simply need volunteer coaches to assist the trainers.
